Chas lies in Bokaro district in Jharkhand, directly next to Bokaro Steel City, and on a map the two form a single urban area with very different textures. Bokaro was laid out in orderly sectors around the steel plant, while Chas grew organically as a market town, with irregular lanes, junctions and bazaars that follow older roads.
The surrounding land belongs to the Chota Nagpur Plateau, gently undulating country with ponds, streams and patches of scrub and woodland. The small Garga River runs through the area, and water bodies appear as scattered dark shapes among the streets and fields at the edge of town.
