Hazāribāgh lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau at an elevation of around 600 metres, which gave it a reputation as a cooler retreat in colonial times. Its name is usually translated as a thousand gardens. On a map it looks less like a dense city than a spread of neighbourhoods laid across rolling ground, with open patches, water bodies and low hills breaking up the streets.
Several lakes lie close to the centre, and small hills rise within and around the town. Canary Hill is the best known, used as a lookout over the plateau. North of town, the Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary covers a large stretch of forest. The town served as a military station in the nineteenth century and remains an administrative centre for the surrounding region today.
A Hazāribāgh map poster rewards a closer look. The lakes appear as clean solid shapes, the main roads fan out across the plateau toward Ranchi and the north, and the gaps between neighbourhoods give the composition room to breathe. It is an airy map, more rural at its edges than most towns of its size, with a pleasing balance of lines and open space.

A small hill on the edge of the built-up area, known for its viewpoint. On the map it appears as a pocket of open ground wrapped by curving roads.
Main roads leave town in several directions across the upland, drawing long lines that reach toward the edges of the print and give the composition its outward pull.
