Chengala lies in the Kasaragod district in the far north of Kerala, a short way inland from the coast. It is a semi-urban area of scattered homes, small commercial centres and roads that follow the lie of the land, set among coconut and areca plantations. On a map it looks less like a compact town and more like a network of settlements joined by winding routes.
The landscape of this part of Kerala is made of low laterite hills, valleys and streams that run toward the Arabian Sea.
