Braided river channels
The Brahmaputra splits into several interlaced streams here. On paper they form the largest shapes in the composition, parallel and branching like strands of loose rope.

Chilmāri lies in the Kurigram area of northern Bangladesh, beside the great braided channels of the Brahmaputra. From above, the river dominates. It is wide, split into several streams and dotted with chars, the low sandbar islands that appear, shift and disappear with the seasons. The town keeps to the firmer ground on the bank, and a modest road network leads inland across farmland.
Life here has long been tied to the river. Chilmāri has been a river port and ferry point, and the surrounding land is shaped by flooding and by water returning to its channels. On a map that shows up as a thin human pattern of roads and settlements set against a large, restless body of water.
A Chilmāri map poster brings out that contrast. The town's lanes form a small, fine-grained cluster, while the river channels spread across the frame in broad, braided shapes. It is a spare image, and a truthful one, of a place defined by the water beside it.
The Brahmaputra splits into several interlaced streams here. On paper they form the largest shapes in the composition, parallel and branching like strands of loose rope.
Low islands sit between the channels, their outlines changing from year to year. On the poster they show up as pale, irregular forms among the lines of water.
The settlement keeps to the riverside, with local roads heading inland across the fields. Its small street pattern is the densest texture on the map.
