Shibganj lies in Bogura District, in the north of Bangladesh. It is mostly rural, and from above the map shows a patchwork of rice fields, villages and small ponds, connected by narrow roads and a few main routes. The Karatoya River runs through the area, and settlements cluster along its banks and along the main road north from Bogura.
The best-known site in Shibganj is Mahasthangarh, the ruins of the ancient city of Pundranagara. It is considered one of the oldest urban sites in Bangladesh. Its fortified walls enclose a rectangular area beside the river, and the surrounding mounds and remains are still being studied by archaeologists.
