Chirkunda lies in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, on the bank of the Barakar River, which marks the state border with West Bengal. The Grand Trunk Road passes through the town and crosses the river, making it a busy point of movement between the two states. The area belongs to the coal and industrial belt of Dhanbad and Asansol.
From above, the town stretches along the main road, with commercial streets and markets following its line and residential lanes branching off on either side. The river forms a broad natural edge, and just upstream the Maithon Dam holds back a large reservoir, one of the projects of the Damodar Valley Corporation.
