Dargaz lies in the far north of Razavi Khorasan province, close to the border with Turkmenistan. It sits in a valley among the ranges of the Kopet Dag, a line of mountains that separates the Iranian plateau from the Central Asian plains, and the town has long been a farming centre for the fertile land around it.
From above, Dargaz is a compact town with a clear centre and roads running out across the valley. The built-up area is surrounded by orchards and fields watered by streams from the mountains, and the map shows the lines of these irrigated plots around the town.
