Deoband lies in Saharanpur district in western Uttar Pradesh, on the flat, fertile plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna. The town is compact. A dense old core of narrow, irregular lanes is surrounded by newer neighbourhoods spreading along the roads, and farmland reaches almost to the edge of the built-up area on every side.
Deoband is known worldwide as the home of the Darul Uloom Deoband, an Islamic seminary founded in 1866 that gave its name to a major movement in South Asian Islam. Its campus and the quarters around it draw students from many regions, and the railway that connects the town with Saharanpur and Delhi passes along its edge.
A Deoband map poster shows a town with a dense, intricate heart. The old lanes form a fine, almost woven pattern, the seminary campus appears as a larger block within it, and roads and the railway lead out across the level fields. In black and white, the contrast between the crowded centre and the open plain is especially clear.
The seminary's grounds form a distinct, larger block within the town, easy to find on the poster among the smaller buildings around it.
The historic core is a dense web of narrow, winding streets that gives the centre of the map a rich, detailed texture.
The railway toward Saharanpur and Delhi passes the town, and flat farmland extends beyond it, leaving wide, calm margins around the dense centre.
