Muzaffarnagar lies in western Uttar Pradesh, in the fertile Doab between the Ganges and the Yamuna, roughly midway between Delhi and the foothills of the Himalayas. The terrain is flat, and on a map the city appears as a dense core of irregular streets surrounded by newer colonies, with highways leading north toward Haridwar and south toward Meerut and Delhi.
The surrounding countryside is dominated by sugarcane, and Muzaffarnagar is known for one of the largest jaggery markets in India. Canals drawn from the Ganges system cross the district in long straight lines, and around the city the land is divided into narrow fields and sugar mill sites, all linked by village roads.
The city takes its name from Muzaffar Khan, a noble of the Mughal court, and was established during the reign of Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century. A Muzaffarnagar map poster shows how an old market town, still densest around its central bazaars, has grown along its highways into the surrounding farmland.
The historic bazaar area forms a compact knot of narrow, irregular lanes, clearly distinct from the more spacious layouts of newer residential colonies.
Main roads toward Delhi and Haridwar run through and around the city, and much recent growth has followed them in long, narrow bands.
Irrigation canals cross the surrounding plain in straight lines, dividing sugarcane fields into a regular pattern that frames the city on every side.
