Dharmapuri lies in northwestern Tamil Nadu in a broad basin ringed by low, rocky hills. From above, the town is compact and roughly round, with the old centre packed tight and the newer streets spreading out along the main roads. Several highways meet here, and their straight lines radiate out from the centre across farmland toward the surrounding ridges.
The area has deep roots. It is identified with ancient Thagadur, which appears in early Tamil literature as the seat of a Sangam-era chieftain. The district is also known for Hogenakkal Falls on the Kaveri, where the river breaks into rocky channels, though the falls lie well outside the town itself.
