Ko e mape
Dornakal lies in Mahabubabad district in Telangana, on the main railway line between Kazipet and Vijayawada. The railway defines the town's shape. From above, the tracks run straight through the landscape, and a junction and yard spread the lines apart. The town's streets cluster beside them, and farmland and tanks surround the settlement on flat to gently rolling ground.
The town has an unusual place in the history of Christianity in India. In 1912 it became the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Dornakal under V. S. Azariah, the first Indian bishop of that church, and the cathedral he built here, which blends Indian architectural forms with church design, still stands. Today Dornakal remains an important junction for rail traffic in the region.
A Dornakal map poster shows how a railway can organise a whole town. Long, precise lines of track cross the sheet, with the modest street network of the town fitted around them and the open rural land beyond. In black and white, the tracks become the strongest graphic element and give the design a clear direction.
The main line and branch tracks spread out through the junction and yard. They form the longest, straightest lines on the map, and everything else is arranged around them.
The streets and buildings of Dornakal cluster on the land next to the railway, a pattern typical of Indian junction towns.
Water tanks and farm plots surround the town. They appear as soft solid shapes and fine field lines that frame the built-up area.
