Fort St. John sits on a broad plateau in the Peace River region of north-eastern British Columbia. On the map it is a clear, rectangular grid of streets and avenues laid over flat farmland, with the Alaska Highway running along its edge as it heads north. A short distance to the south, the Peace River valley cuts deep across the land.
Beyond the city, the landscape opens into wide fields divided by straight rural roads, a pattern more typical of the prairies than of the mountainous rest of the province. To the south, the steep, winding slopes of the Peace River valley break up that geometry. The map ends up as a contrast between ruled lines on the plateau and long curves in the valley below.
Fort St. John traces its origins to a trading post established in 1794, which makes it one of the oldest European settlements in mainland British Columbia. Today it is a centre for the region's energy industry and for farming. A Fort St. John map poster shows both the northern grid and the valley that first drew traders to this part of the country.
The highway skirts the city on its way north-west toward the Yukon and Alaska. Its long, confident line leaves the tidy grid behind at the edge of the frame.
South of the city, the river has carved a deep, winding valley. Its steep slopes draw sweeping curves against the flat plateau above.
The city and the farmland around it share a pattern of straight, evenly spaced roads, a clean geometry that reads very clearly in black and white.
