The Yantra ribbon
The river runs north through the length of the town, with roads on both banks. It gives the map a single strong axis that guides the eye from top to bottom.

Ko e mape
Gabrovo stretches for several kilometres along the Yantra River in central Bulgaria, squeezed into a narrow valley on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains. From above, the town looks like a ribbon: a main road and the river run side by side, and neighbourhoods climb the steep slopes on either side, their streets curling along the contour lines.
The town grew as a centre of crafts and trade, and in the nineteenth century its textile mills earned it the nickname of the Bulgarian Manchester. In 1835 it opened the Aprilov school, the first modern secular Bulgarian school. Gabrovo is also known for its humour, celebrated in the House of Humour and Satire, and for the Etar open-air crafts museum just upstream.
A Gabrovo map poster makes the most of this unusual shape. A tall portrait format follows the river through the valley, with dense blocks in the centre and houses scattered up the hillsides. The Yantra and its many small bridges form the line that holds the whole composition together.
The river runs north through the length of the town, with roads on both banks. It gives the map a single strong axis that guides the eye from top to bottom.
A statue of Racho Kovacha, the town's legendary founder, stands on a rock in the river near an old bridge. The spot marks the historic centre on the map.
Residential districts climb the slopes on either side of the valley. Their winding streets follow the contours of the hills and form delicate patterns at the edges of the poster.
