Ko e mape
Gökdepe lies in Ahal Province, about 40 kilometres west of Ashgabat, on the narrow strip of cultivated land between the Kopet Dag mountains to the south and the Karakum Desert to the north. On the map, the town's streets and irrigated fields form a green band in dry country, with the desert beginning just beyond.
The town is best known for the fortress of Geok Tepe, where Turkmen defenders resisted Russian imperial forces before it fell in the siege of 1881. The site is an important memorial today, and nearby stands the large Saparmurat Hajji Mosque. Both appear on the map as large, deliberate shapes within the smaller street pattern.
The railway and the main road to the west run past the town in long, straight lines, following the old route along the foot of the mountains. A Gökdepe map poster places the fortress grounds, the mosque, the streets and the edge of the desert in one clear frame.
The grounds of the old Geok Tepe fortress, where the 1881 siege took place, form a broad memorial area that stands out from the surrounding streets.
The large mosque and its open surroundings make a strong, symmetrical shape on the map, clearly different from the ordinary residential blocks.
The railway and main road run straight past the town along the foot of the Kopet Dag, linking Gökdepe with Ashgabat and the west of the country.
