Guofu lies in the southern part of Chongqing Municipality, a region of steep hills, narrow valleys and terraced farmland. Settlements here rarely form tidy grids on a map. Streets follow the lowest ground, curve around ridges and gather where the valleys widen, so the land shapes the town's outline as much as any plan does.
Like many towns in this part of Chongqing, Guofu has older streets at its core and newer residential blocks and roads added in recent decades. Around it, the countryside is a patchwork of small fields and hillside hamlets connected by winding lanes. On the map those lanes appear as thin, looping lines that climb away from the centre.
