Hegou lies on the flat farmland of northern Jiangsu, in the region between Xuzhou and the lakes and canals to the east. On the map, the town is a compact centre of streets. Around it, fields, straight rural roads and water channels divide the countryside into long rectangles, with villages set at intervals across the plain.
This part of Jiangsu is low-lying and closely cultivated, and water management shapes the landscape as much as the roads do. Channels drain and irrigate the fields, and their lines often run parallel to the roads. The result is a map made almost entirely of straight strokes, with the town as a denser patch in the middle.
