Howrah stretches along the western bank of the Hooghly River, directly across from Kolkata. On the map the river is a wide, slow curve with the two cities pressed against either side of it, and Howrah's dense lanes run right down to the ghats and jetties. Industrial sites, rail yards and residential blocks follow the bank for miles to the north and south.
Two bridges dominate the view. Howrah Bridge, a cantilever structure opened in 1943 and now officially named Rabindra Setu, lands next to Howrah Station, one of the largest railway complexes in India. Further downstream, Vidyasagar Setu crosses the river at a long diagonal. Between them, the tracks fanning out from the station form one of the most distinctive patterns on the whole map.
In Shibpur, on a bend of the river, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden holds the Great Banyan, a single tree whose aerial roots spread out like a small forest. A Howrah map poster captures a city many people know only from a train window, and shows how its streets, rails and river frontage lock together with the city across the water.

Tracks spread out from Howrah Station in a broad fan of parallel lines, a pattern that gives the map a mechanical, almost engraved quality.

Ko e ha Howrah
Howrah matters to the millions who have arrived, left or commuted through its station, and to the families rooted on this bank of the river. The bridge and the rail lines make the map instantly recognisable to anyone from Bengal.
