Ko e mape
Kabul lies in a high valley at around 1,800 metres, enclosed by mountains, and the terrain is visible on every part of its map. Two rocky ridges, the Sher Darwaza and Asamai mountains, rise through the middle of the city, dividing it into separate basins. Streets stop abruptly at their slopes, and many residential areas climb the hillsides in steep, irregular patterns.
The Kabul River flows through the centre from west to east, often little more than a narrow channel in dry seasons. The old city clustered along its banks, near the Bala Hissar fortress on a spur of the Sher Darwaza ridge. Newer districts such as Wazir Akbar Khan to the north-east are laid out on broader, more regular blocks.
On the slopes south-west of the old city lie the Gardens of Babur, where the founder of the Mughal dynasty is buried, and a long straight avenue leads further south-west to the Darul Aman Palace. A Kabul map poster shows a city shaped by mountains at every scale, with the built-up areas flowing through the gaps between ridges.
The Sher Darwaza and Asamai mountains cut through the city as large unbuilt shapes, giving the map its most distinctive and dramatic structure.
The river crosses the city from west to east, a thin line of water that once organised the old bazaars and remains the main axis of the centre.
The terraced walled garden on the slopes south-west of the old city appears as one of the few formal open spaces in the dense urban fabric.
