Kakegawa lies in western Shizuoka, between the mountains and the Pacific coast. The historic core sits below a small castle hill, where Kakegawa Castle's keep was rebuilt in wood in 1994 using traditional methods. On a map, the central streets gather near the castle grounds, and a river runs close by through the town centre.
The town was a post station on the old Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto, and it remains on the main transport corridor: the Tokaido Shinkansen and the Tokaido Main Line stop here.
