Karakoçan is a district town in Elazığ province, in eastern Turkey. It lies northeast of the provincial capital, in upland country of rolling hills, farmland and river valleys. The town is compact, a gathered cluster of streets and apartment blocks, and from above its edges meet open land with little transition.
Much of the street plan reflects twentieth-century growth. Main roads cross the town and lead out toward Elazığ and neighbouring districts, while newer blocks are laid out on straighter lines than the older lanes near the centre. Around it, the terrain is broad and sparsely built. Field boundaries and a few scattered roads give the outer map a restrained, almost empty character.
