Kharagpur is in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, west of Kolkata, and it is a place defined by two large institutions. The first is the railway: Kharagpur is a major junction on the route between Kolkata and southern and western India, and its tracks, yards and workshops cut through the town in long, straight bands.
The second is education. In 1951 the first Indian Institute of Technology opened here, initially in the buildings of the former Hijli Detention Camp. Its campus now covers a large, green area to the west of the town, with halls of residence, departments and sports grounds laid out along wide avenues. The railway station is also known for having one of the longest platforms in the world.
On a Kharagpur map poster, the railway lines form a strong, angular skeleton. Around them, older neighbourhoods have grown in a dense and irregular pattern, while the campus reads as an open, orderly block of loops and greenery. The result is a map with a clear sense of purpose, shaped by trains and study.
Several main lines converge here, and the tracks, yards and workshops form wide, straight bands across the map, dividing the town into distinct areas.
The campus of India's first IIT occupies a large, green expanse, with curved internal roads, halls and playing fields contrasting with the denser urban fabric beyond.
The station's platform, among the longest in the world, runs beside the tracks as an unusually long, thin form that stands out even at the scale of the town.
