Kottārakara lies inland in Kollam district in southern Kerala, on rolling terrain of low laterite hills and narrow valleys. It is an important road junction where the Main Central Road crosses a major east-west route. From above, the centre gathers around these crossings, and houses spread out along lanes that follow the land.
The town is known for the Mahaganapathi temple and for its place in the history of Kathakali. The early form of the art, Ramanattam, is traditionally credited to a ruler of Kottarakkara. That link still gives the town a recognised name in Kerala's cultural life.
