Kovancılar is a district town in the east of Elazığ province, in the highlands of eastern Anatolia near the boundary with Bingöl. It sits on fairly level ground in the Murat river basin, with mountains on the horizon. The town has grown outward across this plain in a fairly orderly way.
On the map the centre is compact. It is organised around a main road, with streets meeting it at close to right angles. Newer housing extends in blocks around the centre, and beyond that the pattern gives way to fields and rural roads. The main road links the town with Elazığ to the west and Bingöl to the east.
