Loei is the capital of Loei Province, in the north-east of Thailand, and sits in a valley surrounded by forested hills and mountains. The Loei River winds through the town, and on a map its bends are the most distinctive feature, with streets following the water, bridges crossing it and the built-up area spreading out along both banks.
The province is known for its cool season and mountain landscapes, including the high plateau of Phu Kradueng National Park to the south.
