Lonar lies in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, on the Deccan Plateau. Its defining feature is the crater just beside the town: a nearly circular depression roughly 1.8 kilometres across, formed by a meteorite impact into the basalt rock of the Deccan Traps. At the bottom sits a saline, alkaline lake, and the round outline makes Lonar instantly recognisable on any map.
The crater is considered one of the best preserved impact structures in basalt anywhere on Earth, and it has long attracted geologists and astronomers. In 2020 the lake was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and the same year it drew attention when its water briefly turned pink, a change attributed to microorganisms in the salty water.
Old temples stand on the crater slopes and in the town, including the Daitya Sudan temple. A Lonar map poster places the compact street pattern of the town beside the near-perfect circle of the lake, a pairing found almost nowhere else. It is a design that feels almost scientific in its clarity.
