Maintirano lies on the west coast of Madagascar, facing the Mozambique Channel, and is the capital of the Melaky region. From above, it appears as a small coastal grid of streets beside the sea, bordered by sandy beaches, wetlands and mangroves along the shoreline.
The town is known for its isolation. Road links to the rest of the island are difficult, especially in the rainy season, so the sea and small airfield have long been important connections. Inland, the landscape of the region is sparsely populated, with dry forest, grassland and lakes.
