Ko e mape
Mehdya sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast where the Sebou River, one of the country's largest, reaches the sea. The map is framed by water on two sides: the wide, curving estuary and the straight line of the ocean beach. The town fills the land between them, with streets climbing from the shoreline towards higher ground inland.
On the bluff above the river mouth stand the walls of the Kasbah of Mehdya, a fortress whose site has changed hands many times over the centuries. Just south of town lies Sidi Boughaba, a protected freshwater lake and nature reserve known for its birdlife, which appears on the map as a long, narrow body of water parallel to the coast.
A Mehdya map poster sets the town between river, ocean and lake. The broad beach runs along one edge, the Sebou curves inland towards Kénitra, and the lagoon adds a quiet line of water to the south. It is a coastal composition with an unusual amount of open water for so small a place.
The wide lower Sebou curves past the town into the Atlantic. On the map it forms a broad band of water that frames the northern side of Mehdya.
Old fortress walls stand on the high ground overlooking the river mouth, a historic defensive site that still marks the entrance to the Sebou.
A long, narrow freshwater lake south of town is a protected reserve for wetland birds and runs parallel to the Atlantic shore.
