Merta, often called Merta City, lies in Nagaur district in central Rajasthan, on the level, semi-arid plains between Jodhpur and Ajmer. On the map, the town shows a dense, irregular historic core of winding lanes, typical of older Rajasthani towns, surrounded by newer streets and roads that extend outward across the open, dry countryside.
The town is closely associated with Mirabai, the sixteenth-century poet and devotee of Krishna, who grew up in the Rathore household of Merta. Sites connected with her memory draw pilgrims, and the older part of town is marked by temples and traditional buildings. Merta was also the seat of the Mertiya branch of the Rathore clan.
A Merta map poster presents a town where centuries of growth have produced a dense, intricate centre, with roads spreading across the plain towards neighbouring towns. The contrast between the tight knot of old lanes and the wide, pale spaces of the semi-arid land around it works especially well in monochrome, giving the composition a clear focus.
The old town is a tight maze of narrow, winding lanes, the densest part of the map and the area where Merta's temples and older buildings gather.
Main roads leave the town in several directions across level, dry land, heading towards Nagaur, Ajmer and Jodhpur and stretching the composition outward.
Beyond the built-up area, the landscape is flat and sparsely settled, leaving wide open space around the town that frames its compact centre.
