Ko e mape
Nkayi lies in the Bouenza department of the southern Republic of the Congo, in the broad, fertile valley of the Niari. It is one of the larger towns outside Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. From above it appears as a loose grid of streets and neighbourhoods set beside the railway. Farmland reaches right up to the edge of the built-up area.
The town grew around sugar production. The cane plantations and the processing works on its outskirts are still its economic base. In the colonial period it was known as Jacob. It developed as a station on the Congo–Ocean Railway, the line that links Brazzaville with the Atlantic port of Pointe-Noire.
A Nkayi map poster shows a working town shaped by rail and agriculture: a straight line of track, a grid of residential streets, and large rectangular fields beyond. The image means a lot to people from the Bouenza region and to anyone who has travelled the railway through the Niari valley.
The railway crosses Nkayi on its long route between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. The station area is one of the key reference points on the map.
Large plantations surround the town. They produce a pattern of broad rectangular fields and farm tracks that fills the space around the streets.
The town sits in a wide, open part of the Niari basin. The gentle terrain lets the streets spread evenly in most directions.

Ko e ha Nkayi
Nkayi is home to many families whose history is tied to the sugar industry and the railway. A map of its streets is a thoughtful way to mark that connection, whether it hangs in Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire or much further away.
