Orvault lies on the north-western edge of Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique department, and is part of the Nantes metropolitan area. On the map, though, it looks less like a city district than a town of separate neighbourhoods with greenery between them. Residential areas, older village centres and business zones sit among woods, parks and small valleys.
The river Cens crosses the commune in a winding valley lined with paths and green space before flowing on toward Nantes. The Nantes ring road passes through the south of Orvault.
