Panelas lies in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional belt between the humid coastal zone and the dry sertão further inland. The country is rolling and cut by small valleys. On a map the town fits itself to this terrain, with streets that curve around rises and gather along the lower ground, not laid out on one even pattern.
At its centre the blocks are small and closely built. They cluster around the older streets, where the town's commercial and civic life has traditionally been concentrated.
