Parbatipur is a town in Dinajpur District, in the Rangpur Division of northern Bangladesh. It is best known as one of the country's important railway junctions, where lines from several directions meet, and the railway gives the town its strongest shape on the map. Tracks and railway facilities run in long straight bands through the built-up area, with streets and markets gathered on either side.
The surrounding land is part of the flat plain of northern Bangladesh, a patchwork of rice fields, ponds and small villages. The upazila around the town is also home to the Barapukuria coal mine, the country's first underground coal mine. On the map, the town's dense core gives way quickly to open fields dotted with the rounded shapes of village ponds.
A Parbatipur map poster brings the railway to the foreground, the converging lines making a strong, almost architectural composition around which the town gathers. It is a fitting image for railway families, for people who grew up in Dinajpur and for anyone who has passed through the junction on journeys across the north of the country.
Several railway lines converge at Parbatipur, drawing long, straight tracks across the map that dominate the composition and explain the town's growth and importance.
Around the town, rice fields and village ponds form a soft, scattered texture, the familiar pattern of the northern Bangladesh plain in black-and-white line work.
Streets and lanes pack closely beside the railway, forming the busiest part of the town where the markets and everyday commerce are concentrated.
