Pengcheng is a town in the Fengfeng mining district of Handan, in southern Hebei. It sits where the North China Plain begins to rise into the foothills of the Taihang Mountains. On a map the built-up area is irregular. Streets follow valley floors and low ridges rather than a single grid, and industrial sites and rail spurs fill the gaps between neighbourhoods.
The area has long been connected with ceramics. Pengcheng was one of the main production centres of Cizhou ware, the boldly painted stoneware made in this part of Hebei for many centuries. Coal mining later shaped the district and left behind a landscape of works, rail lines and worker housing.
