Qipan lies in northern Jiangsu, on the wide alluvial plain between the old course of the Yellow River and the hills of Shandong. The land is nearly flat, and the map shows it: roads run in long straight lines, drainage canals follow them, and the town itself is a compact cluster of blocks within this larger pattern of fields.
Settlements in this part of the province tend to spread along a main road, with a denser centre and villages dotted across the surrounding farmland.
