Safwan is a town in Basra Governorate at the southern tip of Iraq, very close to the border with Kuwait. The surrounding terrain is almost entirely flat desert, so from above the town appears as a distinct cluster of streets set against a wide, open background, with main roads running out toward Basra and the border crossing.
Safwan has a notable place in modern history. In March 1991, the ceasefire talks ending the Gulf War were held at the airfield near the town. The isolated hill of Jabal Sanam rises from the plain to the northwest, one of the few relief features in this landscape.
