Salisbury lies in the valley of the Wiltshire Avon, where the rivers Nadder, Bourne, Wylye and Ebble all join it within a few miles. On the map, these waterways thread around the city in soft curves. At the centre sits one of England's clearest medieval plans: a grid of blocks known as the chequers, laid out when the town moved down from Old Sarum in the thirteenth century.
South of the grid, the cathedral close opens as a large walled green, the largest in Britain. The cathedral in the middle has the tallest church spire in the country and holds one of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta from 1215. To the north, the earthworks of Old Sarum mark the earlier hilltop settlement.
A Salisbury map poster has an unusual clarity. The rectangular chequers, the wide space of the close and the rivers winding through water meadows make a composition that is both ordered and gentle. In black and white, the planned grid and the natural lines of the valley balance each other almost perfectly.

A large walled green south of the market area, with the cathedral at its centre. It forms the biggest open space in the historic core of the city.
The Avon and its tributaries loop through water meadows around the city. They draw soft, branching lines that frame the grid on several sides.
