Sandanski lies in southwestern Bulgaria where the Pirin mountains drop to the Struma valley. On the map the town spreads along the Sandanska Bistritsa, a mountain stream running down from the Pirin, with a central grid on the flatter ground and streets climbing the slopes. To the west the land opens toward the Struma and the main road south to Greece.
The town is known for its mineral springs and one of the mildest, sunniest climates in Bulgaria, which made it a spa resort long ago. It also has Roman and early Christian remains, and it is often named as the likely birthplace of Spartacus, whose statue stands in the town's park.
