Sarny is a town in the north of Rivne Oblast, in the Polesia region of north-western Ukraine, a landscape of pine forest, wetlands and slow rivers. The town lies on the Sluch river, which curves along its edge, and its map shows a settlement where water and woodland are never far from the streets.
Sarny grew as a railway town. Lines from several directions meet here, making it an important junction in the region, and the tracks, station and rail yards form the strongest straight lines on the map. The streets are arranged around them, with residential neighbourhoods stretching on both sides of the lines.
