Schofield Barracks is a United States Army installation on Oahu, set on the high central plateau between the Waianae Range to the west and the Koolau Range to the east. From above it looks unlike any ordinary town: long parade fields, rectangular barracks blocks arranged around quadrangles, and housing areas with curving streets laid out in deliberate, planned order.
The post has been the home of the 25th Infantry Division for decades, and it was struck during the attack on Oahu on December 7, 1941. It also provided the setting for James Jones's novel From Here to Eternity. Wheeler Army Airfield lies next to it, and its runway appears as a long straight line on the map.
A Schofield Barracks map poster captures that strict geometry: open fields, repeated blocks and wide avenues surrounded by the gullies and slopes of the plateau. For anyone who lived, trained or grew up there, the shapes are familiar at a glance.
The historic barracks are arranged as large rectangles around open courtyards, a pattern that stands out clearly as repeated geometric shapes in black and white.
Wide open fields sit at the centre of the post, leaving large blank areas on the map that give the dense housing and barracks around them a sense of scale.
The runway of Wheeler Army Airfield runs as a long, straight stroke beside the post, a strong line against the curving roads of the housing areas.
