Ko e mape
Shōwa is a town in Yamanashi Prefecture, lying on the floor of the Kofu basin just south-west of central Kofu. The ground here is almost completely level, and the map reflects that with a dense, fine-grained pattern of streets, small residential lots and the occasional block of fields. Larger roads cross the town in straight lines, linking it to Kofu and the neighbouring municipalities.
In recent decades Shōwa has grown into one of the main shopping and residential areas of the basin, with large retail sites along its principal roads. From above, those appear as big rectangular footprints and car parks set among narrow residential lanes. Small watercourses run through the town as well, fine lines that recall the agricultural land this once was.
A Shōwa map poster captures the texture of a Japanese basin town: tight and intricate, with very little empty space. The mountains that surround the Kofu basin do not appear in the street grid itself, yet they define its edges, and on clear days Mount Fuji can be seen to the south. In monochrome the dense pattern looks almost woven.

Major roads are lined with large commercial sites, which show as broad rectangular shapes and car parks among the finer residential pattern.
Small watercourses and surviving patches of farmland run between the houses, a reminder of the basin's agricultural past within a now largely built area.

Ko e ha Shōwa
Shōwa is a place of daily life rather than tourism, and that is exactly why a map of it means something. It marks a first apartment, a family home in the basin or a period spent working in Yamanashi.
