Sojat, often called Sojat City, lies in Pali district in the Marwar region of Rajasthan, on the dry plains between Jodhpur and the Aravalli hills. The old town is a compact tangle of narrow lanes and closely set houses, and on a map it appears as a dense, irregular core from which roads lead out to villages and neighbouring towns.
Around the town the land opens into fields and scrub, crossed by seasonal watercourses and village tracks. Newer neighbourhoods and market yards have grown along the main roads leading out toward the rest of Pali district, gradually extending the town beyond its historic centre in long, loose ribbons. The contrast between the dense core and these open edges is the defining feature of the map.
