Taymā’ lies in the Tabuk Region of north-western Saudi Arabia, an oasis on the edge of the Nafud desert. On a map it appears as a town of modern streets surrounded by irregular patches of palm gardens and cultivated plots, with the open desert stretching far in every direction. Traces of ancient walls and archaeological sites mark parts of the landscape around it.
The oasis has been inhabited for thousands of years and was an important stop on the incense trade routes. The Babylonian king Nabonidus is recorded as having lived at Taymā’ for about a decade in the sixth century BCE. The large historic well known as Bir Haddaj remains one of the town's best-known landmarks.
A Taymā’ map poster shows how water shapes a desert town. Gardens and fields form a dense, organic pattern around the settlement, while newer roads lay a straighter grid over the older layout. The emptiness of the surrounding desert gives the composition a dramatic frame, making the oasis stand out clearly on the sheet.
Palm groves and walled plots surround the town, forming an irregular mosaic of cultivated land that contrasts sharply with the open desert.
This large, ancient well has supplied the oasis for centuries and is one of the most recognised historic landmarks of Taymā’.
Remains of old defensive walls and archaeological sites lie around the oasis, traces of a settlement that has been occupied since antiquity.
