Tongzhou sits on Beijing’s eastern edge, where the Sixth Ring Road crosses a landscape of rivers and canals. For centuries it was the northern end of the Grand Canal, where grain barges from the south unloaded for the capital. The waterways still shape the map. The canal and the Chaobai River draw long lines across the district, and new districts are laid out along them.
Since 2019, Tongzhou has been home to the Beijing Municipal Administrative Center, the city’s planned sub-centre. On a map that means large superblocks, wide axial avenues and landscaped green belts. Next to them sit the older, tighter lanes around the historic town, where the Randeng Pagoda still stands above the canal bank.
A Tongzhou map poster brings together two very different scales. There are big planned grids and parkland along the Grand Canal Forest Park, and there are smaller, irregular streets from earlier eras. To the southwest is the Universal Beijing Resort, which opened in 2021, and elevated expressways run west towards central Beijing.
The canal reaches its northern terminus here. It runs through the district as a wide, landscaped waterway lined with parks, and it forms the backbone of the whole map.
Beijing’s municipal government moved to Tongzhou, and the new centre around it is built on a vast grid of superblocks and straight avenues, drawn at a scale unlike the old town.
The outermost of Beijing’s ring roads curves through the district, adding a long arc of expressway that frames Tongzhou against the wider capital.

Ko e ha Tongzhou
Tongzhou suits people who have watched it change: residents of the new sub-centre, families from the old canal town, or anyone who worked on the district as it grew. The map records the Grand Canal alongside the newest city plans.
Add your own title, a subtitle such as a moving-in date, and the coordinates line. Then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The planned grids read especially well in Blueprint.
