Vancouver is shaped by water on almost every side. Burrard Inlet runs along the north, False Creek cuts deep into the centre, English Bay opens to the west, and the Fraser River forms the southern boundary. The downtown peninsula sits between them, with Stanley Park, a large forested park, at its tip.
Most of the city is laid out on a regular grid of numbered avenues and named streets running east to west and north to south. The grid is interrupted only by the shoreline, the park and the waterways. It is one of the most legible city plans in North America.
