Vyaz’ma is one of the older towns in western Russia, first recorded in the thirteenth century. It stands on the Vyazma River in the east of Smolensk Oblast. From above, the river winds through the town in loops, and the historic centre sits on higher ground above one of its bends, where the churches and old trading streets are.
For centuries the town stood on the main route between Moscow and the west. That route still shapes the map: the railway to Smolensk and Minsk crosses it in a long, straight line, and the modern highway runs past nearby. Housing districts and industrial areas spread out from the centre along these corridors.
