Wuchang is a county-level city administered by Harbin, in the south of Heilongjiang province near the Jilin border. The land is almost completely flat, part of the broad plain of northeast China. From above the town is a compact grid of wide streets surrounded by farmland on every side.
That farmland defines the area. Wuchang rice is one of the best-known rice names in China and is prized for its fragrance and texture. The cool climate and long daylight hours of the growing season shape the harvest. Irrigation channels and field boundaries divide the countryside into long, regular strips.
