Yazd lies on the high plateau of central Iran, between the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut deserts, and its map shows a city designed for heat. The historic core is a dense, irregular maze of narrow covered lanes, courtyard houses and small squares. The historic city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 for its earthen architecture. Yazd is also one of the main centres of Iran's Zoroastrian community, with a fire temple that keeps a flame said to have burned for centuries.
