Zvečan lies in northern Kosovo, just north of Mitrovica, in the valley of the Ibar River. On a map, the town is squeezed between the river and surrounding hills, its streets following the valley floor and climbing modestly up the slopes. The Ibar's gentle curve provides the main natural line through the composition.
Above the town stands the fortress of Zvečan, a medieval stronghold on a steep volcanic hill, one of the oldest fortifications in the region and associated with the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty. The town is also linked to the Trepča mining complex, and its lead smelter, with a tall chimney, has long been part of the local skyline.
