Karjat lies in Raigad district, on the main railway line between Mumbai and Pune. It sits at the point where the coastal lowland meets the steep wall of the Western Ghats, and for generations it has been the place where trains prepare for the climb up the Bhor Ghat.
On the map the railway is the backbone: tracks, yards and the station run through the town, with streets and markets gathered on either side. The Ulhas River winds nearby, and to the east the contour lines begin to tighten as the land rises toward the ridges and plateaus of the Sahyadri range.
