The map
North Haven sits just north of New Haven, in the Quinnipiac River valley. The river runs north to south through the town, widening into tidal marshes as it approaches Long Island Sound. On a map, that valley divides North Haven into two sides, with residential streets on the higher ground and wetlands, rail and highway following the flat land near the water.
Interstate 91 and the rail line both run through the valley, and they shape the town's map as strongly as the river. Along them sit commercial and industrial areas, while the neighbourhoods on either side keep a more New England pattern of winding roads, cul-de-sacs and scattered green spaces. The overall picture is part suburb, part river valley.
A North Haven map poster traces the Quinnipiac's line from marsh to upland, with the highway and railway running parallel and the town's streets spreading out on each side. The long north-south axis gives the poster a natural vertical balance, and the marsh edges add a softer texture at the bottom.
The river runs the length of the town, its banks turning into wide salt marshes toward the south. It gives the map a clear central spine.
Interstate 91 and the rail line follow the flat valley floor, parallel strokes beside the river that divide the town into east and west.
Away from the valley, curving residential roads and wooded patches spread over the higher ground, typical of Connecticut suburban towns.
